Abstract
While analysing epistolary heritage of antique authors we see that epistolary genre is unstable and subject to subjective interpretation on the one hand and is directly dependent on the peculiarities of the epoch on the other hand. From real, connected with everyday life, a letter turns into a composition and occupies an intermediate position between epistolary texts and rhetorical exercises, is used as an art device in epistolary fictions and returns again to the positions of a real letter.
